Temu vs Superbuy: two very different ways to buy from China

Quick answer: Temu sells Chinese-made goods directly at very low prices and has moved stock into US and EU warehouses as duty exemptions ended. It scores 1.8★ from about 56,000 Trustpilot reviews. Superbuy buys the exact Taobao or 1688 item you choose, shows you warehouse photos and ships one parcel. Temu wins on convenience for cheap basics; Superbuy on choice and control.

How Temu works in 2026

Temu, owned by PDD Holdings, grew by shipping cheap goods directly from China under duty-free thresholds. Those thresholds are gone: the US ended de minimis for Chinese goods in May 2025 and for all countries at the end of August 2025, and the EU introduced a €3 duty per product type on 1 July 2026. Temu responded by shifting more stock into local warehouses and opening its marketplace to local sellers, so many "Temu" items now ship domestically.

What Temu reviews say

Temu's Trustpilot score is low: about 1.8★ from roughly 56,000 reviews. Common complaints are quality that doesn't match photos, missing items and refund friction. Plenty of buyers are happy with cheap basics, but you can't inspect before it ships.

When each wins

  • Temu: cheap, generic basics you'd happily replace, needed quickly, where local stock avoids import duty at the door.
  • Superbuy: specific items only found on Taobao or 1688, hauls from several shops, anything where quality matters enough to check photos first.
Verdict: Temu is a shop; Superbuy is a buyer working for you. Pick by whether you want convenience or control.

What a Temu-style order costs through Superbuy

Take five small basics at about CN¥25 each on Taobao, CN¥125 in total, weighing about 1 kg packed. On Superbuy's UPS Economy example that's CN¥408 in shipping including clearance, before duty, so the total is about CN¥533. If Temu sells equivalent items for much less than that delivered, Temu wins on price. The Superbuy route pays off when you add more items to the same parcel, since each extra 500 g costs CN¥50 on that line, or when you want items Temu doesn't have.

Where Superbuy clearly wins

Items Temu doesn't carry, specific branded-by-the-maker products from Taobao shops, second-hand finds on Xianyu, and wholesale quantities from 1688. Also anything where you want to see the exact item first: Superbuy's QC photos, detailed inspection (CN¥5.50) and model try-on photos (CN¥30) have no Temu equivalent.

Is it the same stuff?

Often similar. Many Temu products come from the same manufacturing hubs that supply Taobao and 1688 sellers. On Taobao you can usually choose between many shops, compare seller histories and see buyer photos; on Temu you get one listing chosen by the platform.

Temu FAQ

Is Temu cheaper than Taobao via Superbuy?

For one or two cheap items, Temu usually wins because delivery is built in. Our example of five Taobao basics at about CN¥25 each comes to roughly CN¥533 through Superbuy once CN¥408 of UPS Economy shipping is added. Each extra 500 g on that line costs only CN¥50, so bigger hauls close the gap. Buy single basics on Temu and multi-shop hauls through Superbuy.

Is Temu legit?

Yes, Temu is a real, large retailer owned by PDD Holdings. Its Trustpilot rating is weak, though: about 1.8★ from roughly 56,000 reviews, with complaints about quality not matching photos, missing items and refund friction. Superbuy, by comparison, sits at 4★ from over 1,000 reviews. Temu is fine for cheap basics you'd happily replace, but you can't inspect anything before it ships.

Does Temu ship from China?

Less and less. The US ended de minimis for Chinese goods in May 2025, and the EU added a €3 duty per product type on 1 July 2026. Temu answered by moving stock into local US and EU warehouses and letting local sellers onto its marketplace. Many orders now ship domestically, so check the listing's dispatch location if delivery speed or duty matters to you.

Can Superbuy buy from Temu?

There's no reason to. Temu already sells and ships internationally, often from local warehouses, so an agent adds nothing. Superbuy is built for Chinese domestic platforms like Taobao, Tmall, 1688 and Weidian, and it charges CN¥0 on Taobao, Tmall, JD and 1688 purchases. Order Temu items on Temu, and keep Superbuy for listings whose sellers don't ship abroad themselves.

Are Temu products the same as Taobao products?

Often similar. Many Temu products come from the same manufacturing hubs that supply Taobao and 1688 sellers. The difference is choice: on Taobao you can compare many shops for one item, check sales history and read buyer photos, while Temu shows one listing chosen by the platform. If quality matters, find the item on Taobao and compare several shops before buying.

Do I pay duty on Temu orders?

It depends where the item ships from. Goods sent from China owe duty in the US, where de minimis ended in 2025, and low-value EU parcels have carried a €3 duty per product type since 1 July 2026. Items from Temu's local warehouses don't trigger a duty bill at your door. Check the dispatch location before ordering if you want to avoid surprise charges.

How long does Temu take compared with Superbuy?

Temu items held in local warehouses can arrive within days. A Superbuy order takes weeks, because the seller ships to Superbuy's warehouse in China, you check photos and consolidate, then an international line carries the parcel. Superbuy gives you 90 days of free storage to gather items. If you need something this week, use Temu; for planned hauls, the wait is worth it.

Is Temu or Superbuy better for clothing?

For a few generic basics, Temu is simpler and usually cheaper. For specific styles and accurate sizing, Taobao through Superbuy gives far more choice, size charts in centimetres and warehouse photos before shipping, plus model try-on photos for CN¥30 and detailed inspection for CN¥5.50. Buy throwaway basics on Temu and anything where fit really matters through Superbuy.

Does Temu have buyer protection?

Temu offers refunds and returns under its own policies, but its 1.8★ Trustpilot rating from about 56,000 reviews shows many buyers find them frustrating. The bigger gap is timing: you only see a Temu item when it arrives. Superbuy shows free QC photos in its Chinese warehouse, so you can reject a problem before paying international shipping. For items you want to check, that's stronger protection.

Who owns Temu?

Temu is owned by PDD Holdings, the company behind the Chinese shopping platform Pinduoduo. That explains its low prices and its overlap with Chinese factory goods. Ownership doesn't change how you buy, though: Temu sells directly to you, while Superbuy is an agent that buys listings for you from platforms such as Taobao and 1688. Choose by the item you want, not the parent company.

Can I combine Temu and Taobao purchases in one parcel?

No. Temu ships its own orders from its own warehouses, so nothing from Temu ever reaches Superbuy. Superbuy consolidates only items it buys for you from Chinese platforms such as Taobao, Tmall, 1688 and Weidian, storing them free for 90 days. Combining shops into one Superbuy parcel saves money because the first weight step, CN¥320 for 500 g on UPS Economy, is paid once.

Does Temu have a warehouse in Europe?

Reports say yes. Ahead of the EU's €3 duty per product type, which began on 1 July 2026, Temu shifted stock into European warehouses and opened its marketplace to local sellers. As a result, many orders to EU addresses now ship from inside Europe and arrive without a duty bill at the door. If you're in the EU, check each listing's dispatch details before ordering.
